1 Why We Pray ○
Matthew 6:6
- Prayer is not a performance for others to watch. It happens in secret, before a Father who already sees. Matthew 6:6 "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
- God invites us to pray because He wants relationship, not because He needs to be informed. Psalm 62:8 "Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge."
- Approaching God in prayer proves we believe He is real and rewards those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 "Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
- Jesus built His own life around prayer, so it was never meant to be optional for His followers. Luke 5:16 "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
- Paul told believers to pray continually, treating prayer as a rhythm of daily life, not a rare event. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 "Pray continually."
2 Who We're Praying To ○
John 14:6
- Prayer is addressed to a Father who knows us by name, not shouted into empty space. Matthew 6:9 "This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.'"
- Jesus said He is the way to the Father, so our prayers reach God through Him. John 14:6 "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"
- We are adopted as children, so we can call God Abba, Father, with confidence rather than fear. Romans 8:15 "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"
- The Lord is described as near to everyone who calls on Him in truth. Psalm 145:18 "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."
- Because Jesus is our high priest, we can approach God's throne boldly rather than hesitantly. Hebrews 4:16 "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
3 How Jesus Prayed ○
Mark 1:35
- Before the crowds and the miracles, Jesus rose early and withdrew to a solitary place to pray. Mark 1:35 "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed."
- Jesus regularly left the crowds specifically to spend time alone in prayer. Luke 5:16 "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
- In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed with raw honesty, asking that the cup be taken from Him if possible. Matthew 26:39 "Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, 'My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.'"
- Jesus spent a whole night in prayer before choosing His twelve disciples. Luke 6:12 "One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God."
- Jesus prayed aloud for His disciples and for every believer who would come after them. John 17:20 "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message."
4 The Lord's Prayer, Line by Line ○
Matthew 6:9-13
- It opens by honoring God's name as holy, setting worship before any request. Matthew 6:9 "This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.'"
- It asks for God's kingdom and will to be done on earth, aligning our prayers with His purposes. Matthew 6:10 "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."
- It asks for daily bread, teaching dependence on God for ordinary, practical needs. Matthew 6:11 "Give us today our daily bread."
- It asks for forgiveness in the same measure we extend forgiveness to others. Matthew 6:12 "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."
- It ends asking for protection from temptation and deliverance from evil. Matthew 6:13 "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
5 Praying in Jesus' Name ○
John 14:13-14
- Praying in Jesus' name means asking in line with His character and will, not just adding a phrase at the end. John 14:13 "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son."
- Jesus promised that requests made in His name would be answered for the Father's glory. John 14:14 "You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
- Whatever we ask in Jesus' name according to His will, He hears us. 1 John 5:14 "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."
- Jesus told His disciples that until then they had not asked anything in His name. John 16:24 "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."
- Asking in Jesus' name is meant to produce full joy, not anxious pleading. John 16:24 "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."
6 What to Pray For ○
Philippians 4:6-7
- We are told to bring everything to God with thanksgiving, not only when it's a crisis. Philippians 4:6 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
- The peace that follows surrendered prayer guards our hearts and minds, beyond what we can explain. Philippians 4:7 "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
- We are invited to cast every anxiety on God because He genuinely cares. 1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
- Prayer for others, including leaders, is specifically encouraged so we can live peaceful, godly lives. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."
- Even prayer for daily needs, like bread, is treated as a legitimate request, not a lack of faith. Matthew 6:11 "Give us today our daily bread."
7 Praying When You Don't Have Words ○
Romans 8:26-27
- The Spirit helps us in our weakness when we don't know what to pray. Romans 8:26 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."
- The Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. Romans 8:26 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."
- God, who searches our hearts, knows the Spirit's mind even when our own prayers are wordless. Romans 8:27 "And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God."
- Groaning in prayer is treated as part of a normal life of faith, not a failure of it. 2 Corinthians 5:2-4 "Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling... For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened."
- Even a wordless sigh directed at God counts as prayer He hears. Psalm 38:9 "All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you."
8 Persistent Prayer ○
Luke 18:1-8
- Jesus told a parable specifically to teach that His followers should always pray and never give up. Luke 18:1 "Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up."
- The widow's persistence with an unjust judge eventually secured justice for her. Luke 18:3-5 "And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' ... because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice."
- If even an unjust judge responds to persistence, how much more will a good Father respond to His children. Luke 18:7 "And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?"
- Jesus taught His disciples to keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking. Matthew 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
- Jacob wrestled through the night and refused to let go until he received a blessing. Genesis 32:26 "Then the man said, 'Let me go, for it is daybreak.' But Jacob replied, 'I will not let you go unless you bless me.'"
9 Prayer and Fasting ○
Matthew 6:16-18
- Fasting is meant to be done quietly before God, not performed so others notice. Matthew 6:16-18 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do... but when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen."
- The early church fasted and prayed before sending out Paul and Barnabas for ministry. Acts 13:2-3 "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off."
- Jesus himself fasted forty days before His public ministry began. Matthew 4:1-2 "Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry."
- Esther called for a fast before she risked her life to approach the king. Esther 4:16 "Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day."
- Some things, Jesus indicated, are only released through prayer combined with fasting. Mark 9:29 "He replied, 'This kind can come out only by prayer.'"
10 Answered, Unanswered, and Not Yet ○
2 Corinthians 12:8-9
- Paul asked three times for his thorn to be removed, and the answer was grace, not removal. 2 Corinthians 12:8-9 "Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'"
- God's power is described as being made perfect specifically in weakness, not despite it. 2 Corinthians 12:9 "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
- Jesus himself asked for the cup to pass, then submitted to the Father's will instead. Matthew 26:39 "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
- We are told to keep asking, seeking, and knocking, trusting a good Father to give good gifts. Matthew 7:9-11 "Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?... how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!"
- Habakkuk brought his confusion honestly to God and waited at his post for an answer. Habakkuk 2:1 "I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me."
