Did You Know Ministries ("we", "us", "the ministry") runs this website and the prayer, devotional, and community features on it. This page explains what personal information we collect, why, and what you can do about it. For the specific rights South African law gives you over your information, see our POPIA page.
What we collect
- Account details — name, email address, and password (stored as a one-way hash, never in plain text) when you register.
- Location — the town/area and area code you choose to enter, used only to match you with a nearby Prayer Buddy or Prayer Warrior. This is optional.
- Prayer requests — whatever you write when you ask someone to pray for you, sent to the specific Prayer Buddy or Prayer Warrior you choose (or, if you opt in, also to the Prayer Warrior covering your registered area).
- Profile picture — only if you choose to upload one.
- Donation records — amount, reference, and whatever name/email you provide when donating. Card details themselves are handled entirely by PayFast; we never see or store them.
- Church Bible requests — church name, contact person, phone, email, and address, if you submit that form on behalf of a church.
- Questions you ask us — whatever you submit via "Ask a Question," answered by a real member of our ministry team, never by AI. Kept only as long as needed to respond.
- Prayer & Faith Chat conversations — questions you ask our AI assistant about the faith. This chat never prays with you and never handles a request for prayer itself — it always hands that off to a real person. See Prayer & Faith Chat for how it works.
- Basic technical data — standard web server logs (IP address, browser type) kept only as long as needed for security and troubleshooting.
Why we collect it
Every piece of information above exists to make a specific feature work: matching you with someone to pray with, sending your prayer request to the right person, letting you receive the daily devotional if you ask for it, or processing a donation. We do not sell, rent, or trade your information to anyone, for any reason.
Who can see your prayer request
A prayer request you send is visible to: the specific Prayer Buddy and/or Prayer Warrior you sent it to, and our own ministry team for the sole purpose of running and moderating the platform safely. It is never made public, and it is never shared with anyone outside the ministry.
Special personal information
Under South African law, your religious belief is treated as "special personal information," and prayer requests often contain health or family details, which are also specially protected. We collect this only because you've chosen to share it with us for the purpose of prayer, and we handle it with that sensitivity in mind — see our POPIA page for the specific legal basis and your rights.
Third parties we use
- Supabase — hosts our database and stores uploaded profile pictures.
- Resend — sends transactional and devotional emails on our behalf.
- PayFast — processes donations; we never see your card details.
- Render — hosts this website.
Each of these processes data only as needed to provide their service to us, under their own security and privacy commitments.
How long we keep information
We keep account and prayer-request data for as long as your account is active. A formal automatic-deletion schedule for closed requests and inactive accounts is being worked out — see our POPIA page for where that stands. Until then, you can request deletion of your account and data at any time; see below.
Your choices
- You can edit or remove your town/area from your profile at any time.
- You can opt out of the daily devotional email from your profile.
- You can request a copy of your data, or ask us to delete your account entirely, at /my-data.
Contact
Questions about this policy, or about your information generally, can go to our information officer — see the POPIA page for contact details — or via WhatsApp at +27 68 563 1148.
