1 Trust Over Understanding ○

Proverbs 3:5-6

We are told to trust the Lord with all our heart, not partially or with reservations. Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."
We are specifically warned not to lean on our own understanding. Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."
Submitting our ways to God is promised to make our paths straight. Proverbs 3:6 "In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Human plans belong to us, but the Lord determines our steps. Proverbs 16:9 "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps."
Trusting in the Lord is contrasted throughout Proverbs with trusting in riches or self. Proverbs 11:28 "Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf."

2 Fear Countered by Presence ○

Isaiah 41:10

God tells His people not to fear, because He is with them. Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God."
He promises to strengthen and help, and to uphold with His righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 "I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
David wrote that even walking through the darkest valley, he would fear no evil, because God was with him. Psalm 23:4 "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me."
God repeated the command to Joshua to be strong and courageous because He would never leave him. Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Perfect love is described as driving out fear. 1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear."

3 Casting Your Anxiety ○

1 Peter 5:7

We are told to cast all our anxiety on Him because He cares for us. 1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
We are invited to humble ourselves under God's hand so He can lift us up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6 "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time."
Peace that surpasses understanding is promised to guard hearts that bring anxiety to God in prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything... And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds."
Jesus told His followers not to worry about tomorrow, since today has enough of its own. Matthew 6:34 "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
God is described as near to the brokenhearted, not distant from their struggle. Psalm 34:18 "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

4 God Works Good Through Hard Things ○

Romans 8:28

All things are said to work together for good for those who love God. Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
This promise is tied to those called according to His purpose, not a blanket guarantee of comfort. Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
Joseph told his brothers that what they intended for evil, God intended for good. Genesis 50:20 "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."
Paul described his suffering as producing perseverance, character, and hope. Romans 5:3-4 "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
God is described as able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. Ephesians 3:20 "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us."

5 Waiting on the Lord ○

Isaiah 40:31

Those who hope in the Lord are promised renewed strength. Isaiah 40:31 "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength."
They will soar on wings like eagles, run and not grow weary, walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 "They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
The Lord is described as good to those who wait for Him, to the soul that seeks Him. Lamentations 3:25 "The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him."
David repeatedly encouraged his own soul to wait for the Lord and take heart. Psalm 27:14 "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord."
Waiting on God is treated as active hope, not passive resignation. Psalm 130:5 "I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope."

6 Faith and What We Cannot See ○

Hebrews 11:1

Faith is described as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
Without faith it is impossible to please God, since He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 "Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
Paul described walking by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 "For we live by faith, not by sight."
Thomas was told he believed because he saw, but blessed are those who believe without seeing. John 20:29 "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
The unseen realities of faith are described as eternal, unlike the things we can see. 2 Corinthians 4:18 "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

7 A Future and a Hope ○

Jeremiah 29:11

God's plans for His people are described as plans to prosper, not to harm them. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you."
These plans are specifically to give hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 "Plans to give you hope and a future."
This promise was given to exiles in a hard season, not in comfort. Jeremiah 29:10 "This is what the Lord says: 'When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place.'"
God promised that when His people called on Him and prayed, He would listen. Jeremiah 29:12 "Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you."
They were told they would find God when they sought Him with all their heart. Jeremiah 29:13 "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

8 Trust Refined Through Trials ○

1 Peter 1:6-7

Believers are told to greatly rejoice even though grieved by various trials for a little while. 1 Peter 1:6 "In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials."
These trials are described as proving the genuineness of faith, more precious than gold refined by fire. 1 Peter 1:7 "These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith, of greater worth than gold, may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
James described the testing of faith as producing perseverance that leads to maturity. James 1:3-4 "Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete."
Job maintained that though God slay him, he would still hope in Him. Job 13:15 "Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him."
Trials refined this way result in praise, glory, and honor when Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:7 "These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith... may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."

9 Higher Ways ○

Isaiah 55:8-9

God says His thoughts are not our thoughts, nor our ways His ways. Isaiah 55:8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord."
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than ours. Isaiah 55:9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
God's understanding is described as beyond human ability to fathom. Isaiah 40:28 "The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth... and his understanding no one can fathom."
Job was reminded he could not answer for the wonders of creation, so he trusted the One who could. Job 38:4 "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand."
Trust does not require full understanding first, obedience can come before clarity. Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him."

10 Trust in Motion ○

Hebrews 11:8

Abraham obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. Hebrews 11:8 "By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."
His faith was shown through action, not merely private belief. James 2:22 "You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did."
Noah built the ark in faith, before there was any visible sign of rain. Hebrews 11:7 "By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family."
Faith without action is described as being dead, incomplete on its own. James 2:17 "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."
Peter stepped out of the boat onto the water at Jesus' word, trust expressed as movement. Matthew 14:29 "'Come,' he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus."
